Tarry Trowsers

Mrs Powell

Collected by Francis Jekyll, Minster, Sheppey, August 1910

George Butterworth Manuscript Collection GB/7a/34, GB/5/9

Roud 427

Butterworth included this song in the Journal of the Folk-Song Society 4 (1913), p.327, alongside a version he had collected from Mrs Harriet Verrall in Sussex, and he printed Mrs Verrall’s words. His manuscript collection includes a sheet where both Mrs Powell and Mrs Verrall’s words are written out opposite each other (GB/5/9). Underneath the 2 verses given above, several additional verses are given, but these appear to be taken from a broadside printing – possibly the sheet included in the Frank Kidson Broadside Collection (FK/15/3/1).
